“To call Sue Mengers a ‘character’ is an understatement, unless the word is written in all-caps, followed by an exclamation point and modified by an expletive. And based on Brian Kellow’s assessment in his thoroughly researched Can I Go Now? even that description may be playing down her personality a bit.” —Jen Chaney, The Washington Post • A NY Times Culture Bestseller • An Entertainment Weekly Best Pop Culture Book of 2015 • A Booklist Top Ten Arts Book of 2015 • A lively and colorful biography of Hollywood’s first superagent—one of the most outrageous showbiz characters of the 1960s and 1970s whose clients included Barbra Streisand, Ryan O’Neal, Faye Dunaway, Michael Caine, and Candice Bergen Before Sue Mengers hit the scene in the mid-1960s, talent agents remained quietly in the background. But staying in the background was not possible for Mengers. Irrepressible and loaded with chutzpah, she became a driving force of Creative Management Associates (which later became ICM) handling the era’s preeminent stars. A true original with a gift for making the biggest stars in Hollywood listen to hard truths about their careers and personal lives, Mengers became a force to be reckoned with. Her salesmanship never stopped. In 1979, she was on a plane that was commandeered by a hijacker, who wanted Charlton Heston to deliver a message on television. Mengers was incensed, wondering why the hijacker wanted Heston, when she could get him Barbra Streisand. Acclaimed biographer Brian Kellow spins an irresistible tale, exhaustively researched and filled with anecdotes about and interviews more than two hundred show-business luminaries. A riveting biography of a powerful woman that charts show business as it evolved from New York City in the 1950s through Hollywood in the early 1980s, Can I Go Now? will mesmerize anyone who loves cinema’s most fruitful period. Helen Hardacre provides new insights into the spiritual and cultural dimensions of abortion debates around the world in this careful examination of mizuko kuyo—a Japanese religious ritual for aborted fetuses. Popularized during the 1970s, when religious entrepreneurs published frightening accounts of fetal wrath and spirit attacks, mizuko kuyo offers ritual atonement for women who, sometimes decades previously, chose to have abortions. As she explores the complex issues that surround this practice, Hardacre takes into account the history of Japanese attitudes toward abortion, the development of abortion rituals, the marketing of religion, and the nature of power relations in intercourse, contraception, and abortion. Although abortion in Japan is accepted and legal and was commonly used as birth control in the early postwar period, entrepreneurs used images from fetal photography to mount a surprisingly successful tabloid campaign to promote mizuko kuyo. Enthusiastically adopted by some religionists as an economic strategy, it was soundly rejected by others on doctrinal, humanistic, and feminist grounds. In four field studies in different parts of the country, Helen Hardacre observed contemporary examples of mizuko kuyo as it is practiced in Buddhism, Shinto, and the new religions. She also analyzed historical texts and contemporary personal accounts of abortion by women and their male partners and conducted interviews with practitioners to explore how a commercialized ritual form like mizuko kuyo can be marketed through popular culture and manipulated by the same forces at work in the selling of any commodity. Her conclusions reflect upon the deep current of misogyny and sexism running through these rites and through feto-centric discourse in general.

Instructors' comments on new, 3rd, edition: "I LOVED the book. I've never seen anything like it, and I've reviewed a lot of genetics texts. The way that cases are presented throughout is extremely novel." "I am greatly pleased with the revisions. In my opinion, there is an increased clarity in the text (which will serve students well), and many welcomed updates based on current literature. Good job!" "I LIKE IT A LOT!!" "The book looks good and we will certainly be recommending it for our medical genetics course this autumn." "This is a fantastic book that I enjoy so much teaching from." "I have been reviewing the book. I think it is a great teaching tool since you can follow a case from beginning to end." "I have used this book every year since the first edition was published and it is a perfect fit for my human genetics course. I will definitely continue to use it." "It's great. I will recommend the book as a main text for the medical student class." In the few years since the previous edition technical progress, especially the widespread use of whole-genome technologies, has brought many advances in the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of genetic disease. As a result, most chapters have been substantially rewritten and updated to reflect this. The unique structure and format remains the same, but significant new material has been added to cover: *the widespread use of next-generation sequencing as a routine diagnostic tool *the checking of a patient's whole exome for the cause of their problem *noninvasive prenatal diagnosis by next-generation sequencing of free fetal DNA in the maternal circulation *a new integrated treatment of epigenetics *mosaicism, 'RASopathies' and disorders of the spliceosome are described in new Disease boxes *dysmorphology in more detail New Clinical Genetics continues to offer the most innovative case-based approach to modern genetics. It is used worldwide as a textbook for medical students, but also as an essential guide to the field for genetic counselors, physician assistants, and clinical and nurse geneticists. Reviews of earlier editions: "This book provides a wonderful case-based learning environment. There are also self-assessment questions. Students are not given model answers but are provided with guidance on how to work out the correct answers for themselves. Excellent!" Human Genetics "This book is a very valuable tool that will be used by future geneticists all over Europe and beyond, both as a teaching material and as a source of excellent knowledge."
